The Aldgate Partnership

The Area

The historic area of Aldgate is an area at a crossroads both physically in terms of it’s geographical boundaries but also in terms of it evolution as a place.

It is the gateway between the City, the East End and East London – it’s administrative boundary adjoins the City of London Corporation with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, and within it an array of diverse communities which have evolved with it’s interesting history, making it both culturally diverse but also an area of many layers of infrastructure and historical points of interest.

From the original Roman and Medieval settlements, to the development of new streets, railways and warehouses during the industrial revolution to the bombing and subsequent rebuilding, Aldgate has a diverse street scene and distinct street pattern. Aldgate also benefits from close proximity to some of London’s key visitor attractions – The Tower of London, Brick Lane and Banglatown, Spitalfields and Wentworth Street (Petticoat Lane) all of which are within a short walking or cycling distance. Aldgate is a place of many faces, authenticity and potential.
